Jackie Cruz, also known as Flaca on Orange is the New Black, recently sat down with Celebuzz to talk about her role on the show, her new web series #SoloJackie premiering today (October 22) on vivala.com, her inspiration in Hollywood, and other exciting projects she is currently working on.

Here are 7 things we learned:

1. What are you most excited to share with people on your new web series #SoloJackie?

On #SoloJackie people are going to get an inside look at my fashion, which I am really into. My mother was very into fashion growing up with super cool leather ’80s jackets that she actually left for me. We get to see my closet and how I incorporate my mothers style into my wardrobe today. I also get to show you my family, so you will meet my grandmother and my tia’s. They’re great.

2. Are excited to share your passion for singing with your fans?

I love that people are going to get to see that I love to sing. A lot of people are hearing me sing for the first time in my Como La Flor tribute video to Selena, when I have been singing since I was 7. I love that people are getting to see that side of me.

3. What inspired you to make the Como La Flor tribute video to Selena?

I grew up listening to Selena. I got to listen to her music, and I fell in love with her. I was born in New York but I was raised in the Dominic Republic, so I come from two backgrounds just as Selena did. Her father was so supportive of her dreams and so is my mother. My mother was the same as her father, she pushed me just like he pushed her. Selena seems like a beautiful person from every documentary or interview I’ve seen of her. She’s into fashion just as I am and I just connect with her so much, she’s beautiful. I wanted to do this tribute to her for the 20th anniversary since her passing so people know that her music is still alive and making changes. It’s for her and the people who love her.

4. She told us about her TED Talks speech and university tour:

I have a TED Talks Speech on “Cruzing through Adversity.” I do speeches around universities, and I think it’s really important to tell my story. If I could just help one person I know I did my job, and that is so rewarding. I know I’m helping a lot of people because they have told me themselves, so it’s been really great.

5. What are some things you are looking for as a judge on the Vivala Spotlight Search?

Being a judge on the Vivala Spotlight Search is very exciting. I have never been a judge before and I’m always on the other end being judged. It’s really kind of cool to be on the other side of things for the first time. In the competition I am looking for originality. I don’t care what you look like, don’t care if you’re wearing any makeup, all I care about is originality and your personality. You have to be original and you have to want it. It feels so good when somebody is as excited for the project as you want them to be.

6. What if anything, has your character Flaca on Orange Is The New Black taught you?

My character Flaca has honestly taught me that The Smiths are the sh!t. Before I was Flaca I listened to them a little bit and I knew about them, but I wasn’t super obsessed like she is. She is super into ’80s rock and while I personally listen to more of Janis Joplin, Elvis Costello, and Etta James, our love for music is still there; so we have that common ground. We both like to stand out with our fashion, and especially our eyeliner. We really have a lot in common and I feel like I helped create her in a way.

7. Since Flaca works in the prison cafeteria, which food would you live on for the rest of your life if you had to resort to one?

If I had to live on one food for the rest of my life it would be tacos or ramen noodles. I’m doing this challenge of what’s the best ramen noodle house in New York. I’ve tried almost all of them and so far it’s Total Ramen. So good!
