Daisy Ridley is about to become a household name.
The 23-year-old actress plays Rey in the upcoming film Star Wars: The Force Awakens alongside Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac and more, and landed the role in what she calls a right-place-right-time scenario. “I auditioned for the role because everyone did. I was there at the right time,” she says.
She sat down with Princess Leia (Fisher) to chat about the upcoming movie that will undoubtedly change her life in the latest issue of Interview magazine.
The two talked about many things, from dating after Star Wars to how weird it is to have dolls modeled after them. Carrie started out by asking who Daisy’s role models were growing up. “Well, my favorite film was Matilda. So I’m going to say the little girl [Mara Wilson] in that. I aspired to be like her. I wanted to be a girl who could make a jug of water tip into a glass,” Ridley said.
When it came to preparing for her coveted role in the new Star Wars film, Ridley says, “I liked Star Wars, but I wasn’t an überfan like many people are. Which I didn’t realize, actually, until this year. I don’t know if I can prepare for what’s to come because I don’t know what will,” she said.
Fisher added in her own advice, saying, “[I]t’s hard to date once you’re a big Star Wars star because you don’t want to give people the ability to say, ‘I had sex with Princess Leia.'” And Daisy had her own strange press tour story, saying, “Someone asked me if I found it easier to date now because I’m in the film. I was like, ‘What the hell?'”
Then, of course, there’s all the Star Wars memorabilia that comes along with starring in such a film. “Did you know they’ve come out with Star Wars Band-Aids?” Carrie asks. Daisy goes on to say she thinks there are four dolls modeled after her character in the film, and Halloween costumes of Rey are already popping up everywhere. “I’ve seen some really cute kids dressed as Rey. I love that,” she says.
