Chris Hemsworth Almost Gave up on Acting: ‘I Was About to Pack It in’
Let’s not speak of a world without Chris.
Chris Hemsworth discloses his Hollywood trepidations in the holiday issue of Vanity Fair magazine. The Aussie actor begins by recounting his humble beginnings of pursuing show business in the wake of older brother Luke, who paved the way for him and his brother Liam. “We’re lucky,” says Chris. “We’re all there to help each other, give each other perspective, give each other the right amount of slapping as well.”
He reveals to Vanity Fair that there was lull in his early career where the outlook seemed bleak. “There were eight months where just everything stopped,” says Hemsworth. “I got more and more anxious. I was about to pack it in.”
“I had an audition before Christmas, and as I got on the plane, I thought, ‘I don’t give a s–t anymore. I’m sick of caring.’”
Chris went on to bomb an audition for Thor, but was given anoter shot thanks to a second chance from the film’s creative team and the chill nature of his brother Liam. “One day Joss [Whedon] (The Avengers screenwriter) and Drew [Goddard] were reading the trades, and on the front was the final four for Thor and they pointed to Liam and said, ‘Hey, is that your brother?’” recalls Chris. “And I said, ‘Yeah.’ And they said, ‘Why the hell aren’t you in the mix?’ And I said, ‘I didn’t get a callback.’… ‘If one of us gets it, that’s cool.’ And they were like, ‘No way. That should be you.’”
And now, here we are.
The actor credits his wife Elsa Pataky and his children in their support to move from Malibu to Australia’s Byron Bay to shake shallow L.A., which he believes is “set up to turn you into a complete narcissist”. “You just kind of lose touch with reality a bit here,” says Hemsworth. “You drive down the street and you’re constantly reminded of everything you’re either involved in or not involved in. It’s exhausting.”
