WATCH: Gwen Stefani Openly Talks About Her Divorce, Sings ‘Used to Love You’

Nothing like giving your ex the middle finger through song.

Gwen Stefani got candid about her breakup-inspired new single “Used to Love You” as well as her divorce in a new interview with Elvis Duran and the Morning Show yesterday (Dec. 3).

Explaining to Duran how her prior breakups (and now divorce) has inspired her songwriting, Stefani proclaimed:

I’m just a regular girl…But what I’m saying, when my boyfriend dumped me, you know, who I thought was the love of my life, I just wrote songs. I started writing songs; I didn’t even know I could write a song! And all of a sudden I became empowered, like it became like a wake up. This is my gift, and that’s crazy because now I’m doing it again and I hadn’t done it in a long time.

As for the “d” word, Stefani admitted openly that it happened, and basically all but confirmed it’s because her ex Gavin Rossdale cheated.

I went into the studio, and everybody knows pretty much what happened to me. I got a divorce or whatever, which completely was not in the plan at all…For me, it purely wasn’t and [it was] a shock and horrible, a crazy explosion in my life.

…Then all of a sudden I went in and it was one of those things where I had to force myself to go to the studio because I really just wanted to be in bed crying and do what you do when your life falls apart and I didn’t.

Songwriting in this way became her way of making a positive out of a negative for her.

I went to the studio and I was just convinced that I had to make something out of this. There’s no way, I’m not going to go online and waste my time, I’m going to do something creative. So I went to the studio and started writing. Well I wrote my first song and it was like a little rosebud just blossoming, and I was like, ‘Wow! It’s happening I can do this!’ I know that every time I go into the studio I’m going to write a song and it’s the most incredible feeling. Literally there is nothing like writing a song! It’s like you have to be in the room to see it happen because even the people writing it that are doing it all the time are like, ‘Woah! That’s a good one!’

All in all, Stefani says that she was forgiving of her ex when she was penning “Used to Love You.” “When I wrote the song, I was sorta in a phase of forgiveness,” she shared. “In a way, I’m getting to this point now, and all the songs up to that point were like, ‘Rah, I’m like so upset and so crazy.'”

Not to mention she’s completely happy and thankful that fans are connecting with her honesty and the song. “I cannot believe how rad and magical my life is,” Stefani commented. “I woke up and I’m No. 5 on iTunes this morning with ‘Used to Love You,’ which is like a true miracle to have a song that is so reflecting this crazy, crazy year for me. I just can’t believe I’m going to be on the radio and I’m here right now and that this is happening! Can you pinch me?…I just wanted to say it because it doesn’t sink in. It’s just so insane!”
