Bar Refaeli Arrested for Tax Evasion
Life isn’t so pretty for Bar Refaeli at the moment.
The model was arrested on Thursday (Dec. 17, 2015) for tax evasion following a raid at her Tel Aviv home as a part of an undercover investigation into her tax returns.
The Israel’s Tax Authority claims that Refaeli, 30, had lied about her residency to get out of paying taxes on millions of dollars in income. They also allege that Refaeli had failed to report luxury gifts such as her Range Rover and Lexus, which were provided to her by companies in exchange for publicity.
While Israeli citizen who do not live in the country are exempt from reporting outside taxes, the government believes that Refaeli, who married billionaire businessman Adi Ezra this September, is residing in the country full-time and have fraudulently registered her apartments under her mother and brother’s names.
Refaeli’s mother was also taken into custody as a suspected accomplice. The two were questioned before being released on bail for $193,000.
Refaeli’s attorney is denying that the former Sports Illustrated cover girl has cheated on her taxes.
“There is no drama. In the end, this is just a civil dispute. No-one cheated anyone else. It will all clear up soon,” Giora Aderet reportedly told the NRG news website.
The model and her mother are currently prohibited from leaving Israel unless they get permission to do so. They must also pay a $64,000 bond if they do leave the country.
