Celine Dion’s Husband René Angélil Dies After Battle With Cancer

Céline Dion’s husband, René Angélil, has passed away after battling cancer for over 10 years.

“Rene Angelil, 73, passed away this morning at his home in Las Vegas after a long and courageous battle against cancer,” a statement on Dion’s official website read. “The family requests that their privacy be respected at the moment; more details will be provided at a later time.”

Angelil was diagnosed with throat cancer in 1999 and underwent treatment for the disease as Dion took a hiatus to help him through the recovery process. He went into surgery again to have a tumor removed in 2014.

Angélil was Dion’s manager during the early parts of her career after he had discovered her demo tape in the ’80s. The couple went public with their relationship in 1993 and got married in December 1994 in a lavish ceremony broadcasted on Canadian national television.

The music manager is survived by the couple’s three children — 14-year-old René-Charles and 5-year-old twins Nelson and Eddy — and his adult children from previous relationships: Anne Marie, Patrick, and Jean Pierre.
