Tom Hardy had some playful t-shirts made for the crew of The Revenant to commemorate a supposed light-hearted scuffle that happened on set between himself and film’s acclaimed director Alejandro G. Iñarritu, but what really happened between the two on set?
“When things get a bit too serious, I go, ‘Why don’t we have a cuddle in front of all these people here?’ ” the 38-year-old actor told EW about their fights. “It ends with both of us falling down in the snow. I think that’s a good thing. If I’m the naughty boy for doing that, then I’d rather be the naughty boy and release that tension.”
Apparently this is how the two worked their way through disagreements while on set. Word has it, one day a particularly memorable row occurred between the two and afterwards they posed for a photo.
Hardy even decided to make t-shirts featuring the candid picture for the whole crew.
A signed copy of the image cropped up on Reddit recently.
However, someone commented on the photo with an entirely different (and unverified) interpretation of the on-set squabble.
“That’s not what happened; Hardy got pissed off in an argument with Iñarritu and choked him out. It was a serious fight, and when they made up afterward they were good enough to goof about it and took that picture. My boss was on the crew, I took that picture. (Must have made the internet rounds.)”
Iñarritu is known for his outlandish brand of directing and Tom Hardy has been flagrantly labeled a “difficulty” actor, so it’s hard to know what to believe here.
Regardless, it seems their collaboration has captured lightning in a bottle. The Revenant, which also stars Leonardo DiCaprio, toppled Star Wars: The Force Awakens from its box office lead, and the brutal frontier film has garnered 12 Oscar nominations, leading the pack.
