Chris Rock Calls Out the Oscars As Jada Pinkett Smith Asks Whether People of Color Should Boycott
Even Chris Rock couldn’t resist pointing out how white the Oscars are this year.
This year’s Oscar nominations are incredibly controversial based entirely on the fact that not one person of color was nominated for a major award. The hashtag #OscarsSoWhite immediately began to trend following the news — and for good reason. Now, not only has the host of the Oscars has called out the Academy for their lack of diversity, but Jada Pinkett Smith is debating whether or not to boycott the awards show altogether.
Rock shared a new 15-second promo on Twitter Friday (Jan. 15, 2016), calling the Oscars “the White BET Awards,” just one day after the nominations were announced.

This is the second year in a row that actors of color were shut out of the nominations — some of which included Will Smith, Samuel L. Jackson, and Idris Elba. On Saturday (Jan. 16, 2016), Jada took to Facebook to call out the Oscars, too.
At the Oscars, people of color are always welcomed to give out awards, even entertain, but we are rarely recognized for our artistic accomplishments. Should people of color refrain from participating all together? People can only treat us in the way in which we allow. With much respect in the midst of deep disappointment, J.
Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs spoke out in response to the controversy telling Deadline, “Of course I am disappointed, but this is not to take away the greatness [of the films nominated].” No other comments regarding the issue have been addressed.
We can bet that host Chris Rock will have something to say on Feb. 28, 2016.
