Linda Perry Apologizes to Lady Gaga for Suggesting She Didn’t Co-Write Oscar-Nominated Song

2016 Academy Awards
Brie Larson, Jennifer Lawrence, Lady Gaga and More React to Oscar Nominations

Over the weekend, Linda Perry called out Lady Gaga for not writing any of the newly Oscar-nominated song “Til It Happens to You” with Diane Warren.

And now, she’s saying sorry for suggesting anything of the sort.

Perry took to Twitter to make some pointed statements about “Til It Happens to You,” a beautiful song penned by Gaga and Warren for the documentary The Hunting Ground (an expose about campus sexual assault and rape culture).

Insinuating that Gaga doesn’t deserve the Oscar nomination because she had nothing to do with writing the song (and was only used for leverage for the awards circuit), Perry’s now-deleted tweets read:

Normally I wouldn’t respond to all this but I don’t know Im feeling spunky. There was another artist that originally was gonna sing #TIHTY… I have Diane’s original demo with her singing. The only line that has been changed “Till you’re at the end, the end of your rope”… Originally was “TIL YOU GOT A HOLE RIPPED IN YOUR SOUL”. So I guess technically one line was changed so sure Gaga possibly “rewrote” a line. But chances are Diane still took part in rewriting that line which means Gaga contributed a few words. Is that writing? Not in my book.

I love Gaga so much respect and love this song has nothing to do with anything. Why did Gaga get credit? Maybe because…Diane wanted to ensure her support in promoting the song.

Gaga is a very smart business women she knew a song written by Diane Warren… Would be up for an Oscar. And you know it’s hard getting music out there and heard. Especially a song from a documentary , so Diane knew… If she gave Gaga writing credit it would ensure the support this song needed and deserved. And Gaga knows her power.

Before telling Twitter peace out, she commented #truth and that she gives full song-writing credit to Warren:

I’m not putting anyone … Or anything down. I’m stating the truth . I credit Diane for writing this song,  it is her experience her pain her words. That’s it kids.

Good night! What good is twitter if you can’t ruffle some feathers once in a while.. #truth.

Some Twitter users took screenshots of her tweets (see here and here) in the event that she would delete them, which she inevitably did. In the wake of Perry’s tweets, Warren tweeted out her support of Gaga; while Gaga did not personally comment on the allegations, she did retweet what Warren had to say:

Last night, Perry apologized via Twitter and backtracked, claiming she has no idea who wrote “Til It Happens to You” precisely because she wasn’t in the room when the song was being penned:

Meanwhile, Perry’s own song “Hands of Love” performed by Miley Cyrus and from the movie Freeheld, was not nominated for an Oscar.
