WATCH: Gigi Hadid Breaks Down in Tears Talking About Her Family’s Struggle with Lyme Disease
The model’s getting personal.
This week, Gigi Hadid competed in and won MasterChef Celebrity Showdown, against fellow Victoria’s Secret model, Devon Windsor. Hadid wowed the judges with her “Gigi Burger,” complete with jalepeños and chips, which notoriously difficult to please chef Gordon Ramsay described as, “fucking delicious.”
But Hadid was there to do more than just wow people with her surprise cooking skills, she was competing on behalf of the Global Lyme Alliance for Lyme Disease.
Lyme disease hits very close to home for the model, because her mother Yolanda Foster, sister Bella Hadid, and brother Anwar Hadid, all suffer from the debilitating disease. Before the competition began, Hadid got emotional when she explained why she felt the need to bring more awareness to the disease.
“Not enough people know what Lyme disease is and the dangers of being bitten by an insect,” she said, fighting back tears. “For that on its own is amazing but with [the cash prize of] $25,000, we can help with finding a cure. It can help so much.”
Hadid’s emotions continued to run high after her win when she took a moment to speak to Entertainment Tonight. “I’m the only one in, of my siblings, my mom and my family that hasn’t been affected by Lyme disease,” she said. “It’s been really hard for me because I’m the only one that doesn’t really understand it.”
