Will Smith Joins Jada Pinkett in Oscars Boycott, Janet Hubert Continues to Throw Heat

The Fresh Prince battle ensues.

Will Smith has decided to join his wife Jada Pinkett Smith in her boycott against the 2016 Academy Awards resultant of the lack in racial diversity in this year’s nominees. Will went on Good Morning America to support his wife in the wake of criticism from his former Fresh Prince of Bel Air co-star Janet Hubert earlier in the week.

“We’ve discussed it,” Will explained of his communication with his wife to GMA anchor Robin Roberts. “We’re part of this community but at this current time, we’re uncomfortable to stand there and say that this is OK.”

“My wife’s not going. It would be awkward to show up with Charlize [Theron],” he joked in attending with another woman.

The Smith family received a second heat wave from ‘Aunt Viv’ [Hubert] in an interview with the Los Angeles Times on Wednesday, Jan. 20, where she sought to defend the critical statements that she made against Jada’s boycott in a YouTube video on Monday.

“The Smiths just irked me because they are such pretenders and everything is a photo op. It’s just self-contrived because her hubby didn’t get a nomination,” said Hubert of Will’s nomination snub for Concussion. “I was looking at this ridiculousness people called a historic moment and I was annoyed. I was annoyed because it dilutes the movement when you only stand up for yourself.”

But the shade didn’t stop there.

“Y’all are at your mansion in a gilded cage, standing up there with billions of dollars in the bank. You could do more for the industry and for black Hollywood than anyone could. You could be mentoring young screenwriters. You could be setting up a program. You have the ability to do so much.”

Will remained focused on the future progress to be made in the media industry in his interview on GMA with a progressive response. “Part of the beauty of this country is the ability to disagree. Part of what makes us great is, historically, the best answer tends to win,” Smith said. “I say, let’s keep debating. Let’s do our best to keep it in love and keep it in light.”
