Fox Searchlight Finalizing Record $17.5 Million Deal for ‘Birth of a Nation’ at Sundance
This important film is making waves in Park City!
When The Birth of a Nation was screened at the Sundance Film Festival this year, it garnered an extended standing ovation. The overwhelming buzz led to a record-breaking $17.5 million deal from Fox Searchlight to acquire the harrowing tale of Nat Turner, an African-American who led a slave rebellion in Virginia in 1831.
The film is written, directed, produced and stars Nate Parker. Astoundingly, this is his directorial debut.
With the #OscarsSoWhite controversy grabbing headlines and an Oscars boycott planned by several influential African-American actors and filmmakers, this deal underscores the troubling state of racial prejudices in the entertainment industry and beyond, and the need for more discussions and changes.
We can’t wait for The Birth of a Nation to arrive in theaters!
