WATCH: Steve Harvey Calls the Oscar’s Lack of Diversity a ‘Top-Down Problem’
Can celebrity youth make a change?
Comedian Steve Harvey has a bone to pick with Hollywood’s head honchos in the face of a white-dominated 2016 Academy Awards. Harvey tells Celebuzz that the responsibility falls upon the shoulders of media executives despite young actors like Gina Rodriguez creating opportunities to showcase multicultural talent.
“I don’t know that the actors from the bottom-up can change. I think this is a top-down problem,” says Harvey. “It’s who’s in charge—it’s who greenlights films, it’s who sits on the Academy board. I think that’s the problem right there.”
“Young actors can only hone their skill and get into movies that they’re allowed to read for. I think you gotta get those people up top to change their thought process.”
