The Technology Behind Lady Gaga’s David Bowie Tribute at the Grammys Will Blow Your Mind

Leave it to an artist.

Lady Gaga revealed the technological magic behind her riveting and innovating tribute to the late David Bowie at the 2016 Grammy Awards in an exclusive interview with Mashable.

“His influence is also a magic trick. People don’t even realize how much they’re influence by him until they take a closer look,” Gaga told the publication ahead of her performance .”He’s everywhere.”

The singer, who was recently inked with a large tattoo of Bowie’s face, explained her creative process in preparing to pay homage to her idol. “The first thing that I did was just put together my own mixtape of my favorite David Bowie songs,” she said. “I also wanted to show the growth and the evolution of his music, and I also just wanted people to have a really good time.”

Gaga felt that it was important to highlight the intersection of fashion, music and technology that Bowie created during his career in her highly-anticipated salute, which translated into elements including a hologram of Bowie himself and a rumbling piano. Intel also created a projection of digital makeup that tracked her facial movements with his legendary make-up as she moved. Her ring orchestrated the LED wall behind her through the motions of her wrists

“I want people to be fully immersed in the experience of him, because when I fell in love with him, as a fan,I didn’t just love him and his music,” she continued. “I didn’t just buy his records. I lived the lifestyle that he lived. I became like him, I dressed like him. I worshiped him. I read the materials of his life.”

“I didn’t finish college—but this is like my thesis, in a way.”
