Chrissy Teigen’s Grammys Makeup Look Took 19 Products to Create
Celebrities have glam squads for a reason.
Even though Chrissy Teigen is positively glowing these days, it took over a dozen products to create her sun-kissed makeup look at the 2016 Grammy Awards. According to makeup artist Mary Phillips, they wanted “something bold, but still soft” as to not draw attention to the model stunning Yousef Al-Jasmi gown.
“Her white dress with the crystal and beading detailing is so beautiful. The lines are very clean on it, and the details are powerful but sort of precious at the same time, so we didn’t want the makeup to compete with that, we wanted the makeup to play into those vibes,” Phillips said. “Makeup shouldn’t be fake or contrived — it should just be an extension of you. That’s what I tried to convey with this look: just sexy, real, confident and making a large emphasis on keeping the skin as dewy and glowy as possible.”
So, how can you recreate Teigen’s look? Here’s the breakdown of all the products used in Teigen’s red carpet routine.
Phillips started off cleansing Teigen’s skin with a face mask. While Phillips “wouldn’t do a mask like this the day of,” she said this product was gentle enough for the expectant mother. Phillips used this on “just on the forehead, nose, cheeks and chin” for an “added glow.”
Next, Phillips prepped Teigen’s face with this light serum. “The consistency is so thin, that you can put it everywhere and it doesn’t leave a greasy aftermath,” she said.
Step 3: Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream
Moisturizing is key! Teigen wore this facial cream, which helped sealed in the concentrate in the previous step. Phillips explained, “It creates a really great base that didn’t interrupt the makeup, it enhanced it.”
“Gently pat it on the orbital bone of your eye area is really starts to melt in,” Phillips said. “Fine lines are greatly reduced because of its rich it texture.”
Step 5: Kiehl’s Lip Balm #1
For the lips, Phillips prepped Teigen’s pout with some hydrating balm. She recommended that one should always exfoliant their lips with either a dry or warm wet wash cloth before putting on any products. “Scaly dry lips are not cute, and will only be exacerbated by any makeup products. I like to layer something like this on, very thick, even outside the lip line, and just let the lips drink it up,” she said.
Skin is never only in one tone, that’s why Phillips chose three different shades for Teigen’s makeup. “I like to use varying shades, it gives the most realistic effect for sexy, healthy 3D skin,” she said, recommending that liquid foundation should be applied with a brush and BeautyBlender. “If you’re applying one whole color to your face, you’re making it look FLAT. Create a more natural 3-D effect by layering sheerer colors.”
Phillips applied various shades of powder foundation Teigen’s forehead, bridge of the nose, apples of the cheeks, sides of the neck and center of the décolletage “to mattify certain areas of the face that you don’t want to have too much extra sheen.”
“I applied this under the eye, from the inner tear duct to a little part the outer tear duct, and brought it down to the cheek area on the outside of the bridge of the nose and outside the mouth, and along the cupids bow as well,” Phillips said. The orange undertones in this specific shade of the waterproof concealer will help reduce darkness under the eyes.
For a subtle contour, Phillips turned to this palette to highlight and sculpt Teigen’s signature cheekbones.
To set the makeup, Phillips dusted a little bit of translucent power onto Teigen’s forehead, nose, cheeks and chin to reduce shine but maintain her pregnancy glow.
Phillips applied a little bit of blush to the apples of Teigen’s cheeks and upper crest of her forehead area for a natural “lit” appearance.
According to Phillips, this blush has just the right amount of sheer and sparkles. She said, “Apply to the apples of the cheeks for that fresh pop of color that adds extra dimension.”
Phillips advised that lighter colors on this palette be used to lift and highlight the eyes, while the darker tones be used on the crease for more depth and pop.
This was applied on the top lashes in between the lash hairs to add thicker and bolder lash line.
Phillips put this to Teigen’s lower lash line and diffused it with a dome micro brush. She explained, “I wanted to create the illusion of a liner without any shapes or lines, for a softer smoker eye.”
Step 16: Kevyn Aucoin Curling Mascara
When applying mascara, Phillips said to “wiggle it at the base of the lashes.”
Step 17: Bite Beauty Lip Liner in Cashew
Phillips used this on the outer corner of Teigen’s lips, but softened her application as she worked her way to the inner top and bottom portions of the pout.
Step 18: Tom Ford Lipstick in Sable Smoke
This hydrating lip color was applied using a lip brush, starting from the outside before Phillips worked her way into the center of the lips.
Lastly, Phillips capped off Teigen’s look with a thin veil of gloss to the lips for an extra shine.
