Emma Watson Is Taking an Acting Break to Focus on Feminism
Emma Watson is saying goodbye to Hollywood…for now.
The Harry Potter star has announced that she will take a year away from acting to further her knowledge of feminism. In an interview for Paper magazine, she told bell hooks — author of Feminism Is for Everybody — about her plans to focus on self-development. “I’m taking a year away from acting to focus on two things, really,” she said. “My own personal development is one … my own personal task is to read a book a week, and also to read [another] book a month as part of my book club. I’m doing a huge amount of reading and study just on my own.”
Watson even considered going back to school, but decided against it. “I almost thought about going and doing a year of gender studies,” she explained. “Then I realized that I was learning so much by being on the ground and just speaking with people and doing my reading.”
During her time off, she also plans to focus on her numerous feminist-led projects. Hooks complimented the actress for taking her “celebrity activism” to a deeper level of education than many others do. After all, not many celebrities would take time away from their careers to focus on feminism. However, not Hollywood stars are like Emma Watson.
