Movie Casting Update: Whoopi Goldberg Joins 9/11 Drama, Zendaya Swings into ‘Spider-Man’ Reboot

We’ve searched everywhere for the latest casting news and compiled the stories you need to see featuring stars like Charlie Sheen, Zendaya and J.K. Simmons.

Today shooting began on an independent film about five individuals trapped in an elevator in the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. Aptly titled Nine Eleven, the film will star Whoopi Goldberg and Charlie Sheen. Unlike World Trade Center and United 93, this sounds like more of a contained story of the terrorist attacks. J.K. Simmons, the character actor who snagged an Oscar last year for his ferocious performance in Whiplash, has joined the cast of DC’s Justice League, which will feature a slew of costumed heroes including Batman (Ben Affleck), Superman (Henry Cavill), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), The Flash (Ezra Miller) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher). Simmons will be playing Commissioner Gordon, the role Gary Oldman embodied in the The Dark Knight trilogy. Traditionally, Gordon is Batman’s liaison to the world of law enforcement. Remember that Spider-Man re-reboot in the works starring Tom Holland? Well, singer and actress Zendaya has just joined the cast. She’ll play Michelle, who is reportedly not a love interest for Spidey. Holland will first be appearing as the web-shooting crimefighter in Captain America: Civil War, out May 6. [Deadline]
