Richard Simmons Is Not Being Held Hostage by His Housekeeper, ‘I Just Sort of Want to Take Care of Me’

Can he live?

Richard Simmons wants everyone to know that he is safe and doing just fine despite a report over the weekend that he was being held hostage in his home by his housekeeper, Teresa Reveles. A New York Daily News article claimed that Reveles is an “object of suspicion” in Simmons’ disappearance from the public eye for over two years. The fitness guru put this rumor to rest in an exclusive interview with Today on Monday morning (Mar. 14, 2o16).

“No one is holding me in my house as a hostage,” Simmons told Today’s Savannah Guthrie in a phone interview on Sunday night. “You know, I do what I want to do, as I’ve always done, so people should sort of just believe what I have to say because, like, I’m Richard Simmons!”

He tells Guthrie that the concept of Reveles holding him hostage is “just very silly”. “Teresa Reveles has been with me for 30 years; it’s almost like we’re a married couple.”

Simmons says that his movement away from the limelight is deliberate. “I wanted to be a little bit of a longer for a while,” he says, telling Guthrie that his knee is recovering from the “thousands and thousands of classes” he’s taught over his career. “I just sort of want to take care of me. I just really don’t want to do anything. I just don’t want to be traveling anymore. It certainly has taken its toll on me.”’

He extended a message of gratitude to his fans who were concerned for his wellbeing. “I want to tell them that I love them with my whole heart and soul and that not to worry, Richard’s fine,” he assured.

“You haven’t seen the last of me — I’ll come back, and I’ll come back strong.”
