Michelle Obama Recruits Kelly Clarkson, Zendaya, Missy Elliot and More to Bless Us with the Ultimate Girl Power Anthem
Three snaps for the FLOTUS.
First lady Michelle Obama and songwriter Diane Warren of Lady Gaga’s “Til It Happens To You” teamed up to recruit heavy hitters from the female pop vocalist world to record a female empowerment song, “This Is For My Girls”. The single was released on Tuesday, Mar. 15 during South by Southwest, featuring Kelly Clarkson, Missy Elliot, Kelly Rowland, Janelle Monae, Lea Michele, Zendaya, Jadagrace and Chloe & Halle.
“It’s kind of like ‘We Are the World’ meets ‘Lady Marmalade’ with these strong voices and strong women,” Warren told Billboard. “When was the last time you heard a song like this or a record that had this many amazing divas on it? I’m really proud.”
The song, executive produced by AOL’s MAKERS, is available for purchase and preview on iTunes. All proceeds will go to the White House’s Let Girls Learn campaign and the estimated 62 million girls who are without access to education as all of the featured artists waived royalties and fees.
Obama’s SXSW keynote address will be live streamed at 11:30 a.m. EST and will include a performance of the song. Click here to watch, and launch the gallery at the top of the page to view photos of Clarkson’s style evolution.
