Gwen Stefani Admits Divorce from Gavin Rossdale Is ‘Still Painful’

“I was so embarrassed…”

Gwen Stefani may be in a brand new relationship, but she’s still not 100% over her split from husband of over a decade, Gavin Rossdale. During an appearance on Good Morning America, the singer admitted the split is “still painful” for her. “I’m still looking at the pieces going, ‘What is happening?’ There’s so many great things but it’s still super hard to have your family break up … What do you do after that? Like, here we are.”

While Stefani has yet to divulge the details behind the split, she once said it was a “really good, juicy story,” she did admit the demise of her marriage was embarrassing. “I felt like I was so, I was so – I can’t even find the words, oh my God – I was embarrassed, and I felt like, ‘Wow, I can’t go down. This is not who I am, I’m not gonna fail.’ I had to make something good out of it, so I tried to write … I was like, ‘I’m gonna do this, I’m gonna make this into music.'”

Several songs on This Is What the Truth Feels Like, chronicle the end of her relationship with Rossdale, but ultimately, Stefani is glad her new relationship allowed her to end the album in a positive place. “But I feel like I’m in an amazing songwriting place. Instead of being closed off, I’m thinking about positivity and how I can do something creative,” she explained. “Now I don’t have to be insecure or write about heartache.”
