This Week in K-Pop: Minzy Leaves 2NE1, SM’s Kai and Krystal Are Dating, GOT7’s ‘Fly’ Sweeps
Curious about K-pop but don’t know where to start? Longtime veteran of the most interesting genre in music? Just an all-around happy-go-lucky music lover in general? Well, you’ve come to the right place because it’s an exciting time in the world of K-pop.
Since we at Celebuzz! love any and all music, every week we’ll be taking a look back at the best things that happened in K-Pop. And this past week, folks, was a big one. Music-wise, GOT7 is sweeping the music shows with their song “Fly.” Gossip-wise, the internet collectively freaked out when SM Entertainment confirmed that EXO’s Kai and f(x)‘s Krystal were dating (!). And lastly, sadly, today YG Entertainment announced that Minzy would be leaving the group 2NE1 after 7 years of them together as a quartet.
Minzy and 2NE1
Yep. 2NE1 is to become a trio, with the youngest member Minzy officially departing and members CL, Park Bom and Dara remaining. 2NE1’s label YG confirmed that Minzy’s contact expires next month and she’s not going to renew. According to Billboard, “The news followed reports of 22-year-old Minzy searching for a new agency ahead of her contract expiration on May 5.”
Meanwhile, CL, Park Bom and Dara reportedly have new music in the works expected for a summer release, which is bittersweet news considering they haven’t released an album since 2014’s Crush. In case you don’t know, now you know: 2NE1 is one of the hottest international K-pop groups out there, and for good reason. Their songs are bangers.
Kai and Krystal
Kai, of SM’s Exo, and Krystal, of SM’s f(x), are a couple. Affectionately known as “Kaistal,” they’re basically the “Jelena” or K-Pop, so this is huge to say the least. SM confirmed the news on April 1st, leaving fans worldwide to think that this was some cruel April Fool’s joke. But indeed, their relationship is the real thing, especially now that there’s plenty of photos of the pair spotted out together (incognito) at hotels and ski resorts circulating the web. We’re not the first to say that we absolutely ship this couple:
GOT7 have overtaken Red Velvet this week on the music shows with their song “Fly,” nabbing the No. 1 spots on SBS MTV The Show, Mnet MCountdown, KBS Music Bank and SBS Inkigayo. They’ve also made their way onto the Billboard Artist 100 chart (dated April 9) at No. 45, which is quite a feat considered they’re only the second K-pop group to succeed in ranking, after PSY. Not only is GOT7 this week’s highest debut, but in fact they’ve also managed to outpeak PSY, who only hit No. 88 on the charts back in Dec. 2015.

SM has a new rookie boy group debuting called NCT U, and they’ve been slowly rolling out individual teasers for the boys along with what sounds like an amazing debut song. Check some of them out below:
Big Bang are killin’ it on the TIME 100 reader’s poll. With 2.6%, they’re currently in the #2 position behind Bernie Sanders, and ahead of people like Barack Obama, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Adele, and Pope Francis. From TIME:
The TIME 100 is comprised of world leaders, great minds in science and technology, outstanding figures in the arts and other icons of the moment. TIME’s editors ultimately choose the TIME 100, but we want to know what you think.
(2NE1’s CL is also on the list with 1% of the vote).

The rumor mill is churning for Beast’s Hyunseung again. After he was spotted arriving at the airport alone, people have once again begun speculating if there’s tension within the group and if he’s planning on leaving. According to previous reports, he came under fire back in February for his “rude behavior,” prompting him and Beast’s management Cube Entertainment to publicly apologize. It’s worth noting that Cube has denied the rumors of his departure, but fans are still uncertain.
