Katie Holmes Is Directing Her First Film
Katie Holmes can now add director to her resume.
The actress made her directorial debut in the new drama, All We Had, in which she also stars as Rita, a mother fighting to create a better life for her daughter. So why this movie? Well, the mother-daughter story — an adaptation of Annie Weatherwax’s novel — really stuck with her. “There was a line in the book, something like, ‘Superheroes drive broken-down cars, and they take their kid with them everywhere no matter what,’ ” she said. “That was such a wonderful theme and a nice thing to put into the world.”
She and Tom Cruise’s daughter, Suri, not only helped her to add depth to her character, but she also inspired the Dawson’s Creek alum to get behind the camera. “One day my daughter and I were going to ballet class,” Holmes revealed to Variety, “and the sun was shining a certain way and I was videoing on my iPhone because the shadows were great.”
However, despite the fact that she’s found a new love in directing, she’d never give up acting completely. “I’m an actress,” she said simply. “You don’t give good roles away.”
