Ian Somerhalder Is Leaving ‘The Vampire Diaries’ After Next Season, Show May Continue
Damon is leaving Mystic Falls!
Hopefully you’re sitting down…Ian Somerhalder has announced that he’s leaving The Vampire Diaries. The show’s eighth season will be his last as the broody, handsome vampire. Last week, Somerhalder participated in a Q&A at Nashville’s Walker Stalker Con where he reportedly told attendees, “We have decided one last season to really do the story justice.”
Naturally, this had fans in an uproar. So yesterday the 37-year-old actor tweeted a clarification:
“Hey all, so… Last weekend I talked to an audience at a Q&A about the end of #TVD and how excited I was to make what I believe – my last year – be as great as possible.”

He went on to state that many things are not set in stone, despite his departure. The show could theoretically continue after season eight.
“Thing is, the people who actually make that decision (the CW and WB) haven’t made it yet! So let’s take things one step at a time: Season 7 wrap, vacation, lots of sleep, let the writers get started on Season 8, and then we’ll all see where we go from there.”
So there you have it. One final season. Like that last encounter after an intense love affair. It can be awkward, or you can try and make the most of it…
