“It would have never happened that way.”
It’s been almost 15 years since R&B sensation Aaliyah perished in a tragic plane accident, and the people who were closest to her are still dealing with their grief. Damon Dash, Roc-A-Fella Records co-founder and Aaliyah’s boyfriend at the time of her death, stopped by The Real and opened up about her untimely passing, admitting if he’d been with her on that fateful date, the singer might still be alive.
“Well, there is no chance that if I was there, we would have been on that plane. You know what I’m saying? So, it would have never happened that way,” he told the co-hosts. It’s clear that even before the fateful crash, Dash believed the plane was unsafe and urged the singer not to go, but seeing as he was miles away in New York, there was not much he could do.
“She told me she was going to the Bahamas and I was against it like, ‘Yo, don’t go.’ And then down to the last, we had the Blackberry, down to the last Blackberry that we had, before she went there, she was like, ‘Yo, I don’t like that plane.’ And I was like, ‘Don’t get on it.’ And she was just like, ‘You know, I gotta do it,'” he remembered. “It was a complicated situation, but she had to go do that video. So you know if I was there, I would have made sure that that jet that was supposed to be for her, the G4, she would have been on that.”
Even though Dash is sure he could have prevented Aaliyah’s tragic death, he tries not to dwell on the possibilities too long, “You know, and what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger and you just gotta deal with the cards that life deals you.”
