Charlize Theron Is Fierce and Elegant on ‘V Magazine’ Cover
The inspiring beauty talked about her struggles as a young actress in the magazine’s latest issue.
Charlize Theron seems like she can do anything. She can transform to play a vengeful prostitute in Monster, or the lovable, doofy Brit Rita on Arrested Development, or even the one-armed badass Furiosa in last year’s dazzler Mad Max: fury Road. But she wasn’t always an emblem of feminine strength on screen. Once she was just a young actress trying to make it in Hollywood. In the most recent issue of V Magazine, Theron chatted with James Franco (of all people) about her early days in the entertainment industry and what she learned.
One early experience that took a serious toll on the actress was filming The Cider House Rules, in which she shared an on-screen romance with Tobey Maguire.
“Tobey and I had a bit of a rough time, yeah. I mean, we’re good now. It was a difficult movie,” she said. “Every day [on set was] completely different for a completely different reason. Whether it’s the weather, or the writing isn’t there, or you don’t get along with your castmate, you have to be able to go to something else that’s just as powerful.”
The film was an education for the then-newcomer, about the craft of acting as well as the price of a good performance. “It teaches you different things. It taught me that I could fall in love with somebody in my head while looking at someone else. We had some really intimate moments. Tobey and I didn’t feel that way about each other, so I had to figure something else out.”
What happened on that set?! The issue with the actress’s interview arrives on newsstands May 5, 2016.
