WATCH: Regis Philbin Addresses the Kelly Ripa x Michael Strahan Drama Like Your Dad Would

Compliments on the purple sweater, sir.

Regis Philbin held a mini press conference for paparazzi on the streets of New York to express his thoughts on the daytime drama between Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan following Strahan’s sudden departure from Live! With Kelly and Michael in order to pursue a full-time gig on Good Morning America.

His address was classic ‘Reeg’ down from top to bottom, beginning with one of those self-deprecating, hardy-har jokes that your dad would probably make when confronted with an uncomfortable subject.

“Regis left five years ago,” he said. “I don’t know anybody!”

He heckled a babbling child before expressing his sympathy for Ripa. “I know what it is,” began Philbin. “[The show runners] should have told her at the beginning.”

When asked if he would come back to Live!, Ripa’s former co-host said that he would “have to think about it” before deflecting the conversation to color commentary on Strahan’s football career and giving a non-conclusive reply to one reporter’s questioning of who should fill the chair, if not him.

“Whoever it is, God bless ‘em. Regis has had enough,’ he replied in third-person. “28 years there, five more in Hollywood before I came here. I’M DONE!”

Some people are saying that Ripa intended to fire a shot at Strahan through the book that she was carrying “David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants”, when she was first spotted out in New York prior to his announcement. Ripa was alerted of the change just after the duo finished taping on Tuesday, and just before the news of of his move went public, but insiders tell Page Six that the writing was on the wall.

“They could not stand each other, and whenever they communicated off-camera,” said a Ripa source. “It was always through their reps.”

“He was having temper tantrums,” says another. “He’d lose it, yelling at [Ripa] and [Live executive producer Michael] Gelman.“He acted like he was in a locker room, not a dressing room.”

Ripa has been absent from her seat on the show since the shake-up and will be gone for at least another week while she and her husband Mark Consuelos embark on a “pre-planned” vacation to Turks and Caicos. Erin Andrews and Shay Mitchell will take over as guests until she returns.

“I’ve been sitting next to Kelly every day and having a lot of fun on that show for the last four years,” said Strahan on a visit to GMA on Thursday. “I’m very thankful for her—to her—because I learned so much from her.”
