Michael Strahan Will Jump the ‘Live!’ Ship Earlier than Expected to Join ‘GMA’

We hardly knew ye.

Live! With Kelly and Michael co-host Michael Strahan will reportedly leave his current post earlier than originally expected following the sudden shakeup that occurred between himself and Kelly Ripa.

“May 13 is his last show,” a show insider tells People. “He’ll take the summer off and GMA can integrate him early before September, and this will give Live! more time to find the co-host. He’s totally fine with that. Now he can enjoy his summer.”

ABC execs confirmed his early send-off. “After meeting with the producers of both Live! and Good Morning America, and after speaking with Kelly and Michael, we have decided on a plan that best advantages both shows for the future,” they issued in a statement, “To that end, Michael’s last day on Live! will be on Friday, May 13, which not only gives the show the chance to have a nice send-off for him during the May book, but to also immediately begin the on-air search for a new co-host.”

The note also added that this plan of attack will allow for the show to slowly integrate Strahan into their regular schedule.

Another source confirms to People that Strahan’s premature leave has nothing to do with petty grievances. “He was willing to stay until the fall, but the network is saying this gives them more time to find the co-host,” they say. “He’s a team player. He will do what they ask.”

Ripa returned to the show on Tuesday, Apr. 26 and made an emotional address at the top of the show to offer her perspective on the standoff. “Our long national nightmare is over,” she joked, reassuring fans that, “Apologies have been made. The best thing to come out of this is our parent company has assured me that Live is a priority.”
