Drew Barrymore Says She Felt Like the ‘Biggest Failure’ After Her Divorce from Will Kopelman
The actress is moving on amid her latest public heartbreak.
Drew Barrymore discussed the news of her divorce from her husband, Will Kopelman, on the premiere of Chelsea Handler’s Netflix talk show, Chelsea. Barrymore explained the critical language that she used in her divorce statement to describe their parting.
“I put in my statement about divorce the word ‘failure’ because it’s so honest,” she said. “Like, when you get divorced, you break up with somebody and you’re like, ‘Yeah, that didn’t work,’ and you get divorced, [but] when you get divorced you’re like, ‘I’m the biggest failure. This is the biggest failure.’ It’s so shameful and hard to actually go through that, even privately.”
Though she is pushing forward with support from her friends and fans, Barrymore states that the pain is difficult to bear. “It’s like you’re being put on a cheese grater and every second, going, ‘Ah! This wasn’t the plan!'”
“What I do want is girlfriend time,” Barrymore confesses.
The couple announced their divorce in April, noting that their children’s well-being is their top priority. “Divorce might make one feel like a failure, but eventually you start to find grace in the idea that life goes on,” she expressed in the statement.
