Shawn Mendes Talks About Whether or Not He and Camila Cabello Are a Thing
The 17-year-old clarified once and for all if he and the Fifth Harmony member are getting romantic.
Shawn Mendes may be an incredible success story but he hasn’t let his feet leave the ground. The young performer spoke with Seventeen magazine about his professional fears now that he’s found a place in the pop music world.
“It’s hard for me to just say, ‘Wow, this is amazing — I’m famous. I’m living the dream,'” he said. “I sit there and think, I’m scared — this can go away tomorrow. My dad always says that I’m a tortured soul because I’m never pleased; I never feel like I deserve what I’ve achieved.”
Mendes is clearly elated for the release of his second album, noting what although he’s inexperienced in some ways, his music also draws from artists he reveres.
“It’s a mix of pop and like a John Mayer-and-Ed Sheeran acoustic feel all in one — my friends and I think John Mayer is this music god who we’ve grown up learning from,” he said. “I have songs about growing up, about ex-relationships—ex-relationship, I should say. I haven’t had relationships. A couple of songs about relationships with girls since fame.”
For Mendes, making music is the goal, not developing a wild nightlife, which helps keep him focused and avoid a myriad of problems many young superstars face.
“Drugs and stuff scare the shit out of me. I’m not just saying that. I have a thing where if I’m not in control, I feel the whole world is about to collapse. So it’s just not worth it.”
The young crooner also revealed what exactly is going on between himself and Camila Cabello:
“She’s phenomenal. I love her. And she’s so talented. She’s one of the sweetest girls I’ve ever met and super, super-smart. We aren’t dating, but musically she just blows my mind.”
