2016 Billboard Music Awards: BET Throws Shade After Madonna and Stevie Wonder Team Up for Prince Tribute
“Yea, we saw that.”
Last night (May. 22, 2016), Madonna took the stage at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards for her much anticipated tribute to the music legend Prince. Not much was known about the performance prior to Madonna hitting the stage, but the choice in singer was already controversial. Many Prince fans felt that given the singer’s tumultuous history, Madonna wasn’t the right choice and believed an even better tribute could have been pulled off by a bevy of black artists.
None the less, the show went on with Madonna singing a rendition of “Nothing Compares to You,” before Stevie Wonder joined her on stage to close out with “Purple Rain.” Immediately critics took to the internet to rip apart the “pitchy” performance. While there were a lot of disappointed fans, no one was as disappointed as BET.
Soon after the performance ended, BET took to Twitter to throw the shadiest of shade at the performance and promised to deliver a Prince-worthy tribute of their own.
