Rob Lowe Might Become Kelly Ripa’s New ‘Live’ Co-Host
Your mom is probably really excited by this news.
Lowe is not only available (his show The Grinder got the axe by Fox last week after just one season), he’s experienced: he guest-hosted for two days back in 2012 when ABC was looking for Regis Philbin’s replacement. Although the gig eventually went to Strahan, the network is talking to Lowe’s reps again, sources confirm to ET.
ET asked Lowe about co-hosting while on the set of his upcoming film How to Be a Latin Lover on Monday (May 23):
I hosted it with Kelly and had the time of my life. I love her … I love being able to talk to an audience every morning like that and just being fun, counter-punching, being silly, and talking about cool stuff.
He also admitted that now would be a good time for the gig, too, now that his kids are older and out of the house (his son John, 19, is attending Stanford and his son Matthew, 21, is preparing to go to law school):
My kids are out of the house, they weren’t then. Who knows… But listen, man, I don’t want to go up against Anderson Cooper. I don’t know if I’m going to go back as an actual guest host yet. … You never know! You never know.
Cooper, the gorgeous CNN news anchor, has been cited as the frontrunner for Kelly’s new co-host. However, last month during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, he said he had not been offered anything and was happy as host of Anderson Cooper 360:
Look, I’m very happy at CNN. It would be a dream to work with Kelly, but nobody’s offering anything…I love Kelly and I think Kelly is the heart and soul of that show, and it’s gonna go on and continue to be great.
Since Strahan’s exit, Ripa has co-hosted with a number of charismatic gentlemen like Empire’s Jussie Smollett, ABC World News Tonight anchor David Muir and Jimmy Kimmel. Next month she’s slated to guest co-host alongside Ryan Seacrest.
