Carmen Electra Reveals What it was Like Meeting Prince for the First Time
Carmen Electra is still reeling from the death of her mentor.
It’s been more than 20 years since Electra met rock legend Prince, but she still remembers the day like it was yesterday. “That first time I met Prince, he was very quiet,” the cover star told LaPalme magazine. “I was very shy, so there was this awkward moment of us just kind of standing in front of each other.” Electra recounts how even though there weren’t sparks between the two at first, eventually, they warmed up to each other and the musician “broke the ice by asking me if I wanted to play pool, and I was so horrible that he just kept laughing at me.”
Electra, who has always credited Prince for launching her Hollywood career, also told the story of how he named the star who was born, Tara Leigh Patrick. “I reminded him that my name was Tara. He told me, ‘You look like a Carmen, so to me, you’re Carmen,” she recalled. “He was so mysterious, but one of the wittiest people I’ve ever met. He was simply one of a kind.”
Even though the entertainers weren’t as close in recent years, Electra says his death hit her harder than anyone could have imagined. “It was very generous for him to give me a chance to start a music career, and I’ll always be grateful that he believed in me and took a chance on me. We’re all devastated, and it didn’t seem like it was his right time to go.”
