Garbage’s Shirley Manson Reveals She Was Sexually Assaulted at Age 13
Be advised: This is a pretty disturbing account…
Shirley Manson, lead singer of the alt-rock group Garbage has decided to open up about being sexually assaulted as a young teen. The now-49-year-old musician spoke with Billboard magazine about the horrific experience and the lasting effect it had on her.
“A boy fingered me, then grabbed a knife and told me he was going to stick it up my vagina. I was 13 years old,” she said. “It frightened the shit out of me.” It was her first sexual experience. A few days later, Manson realized that she left her bra at the boy’s house. He threatened to mail it to her parents.
The performer explained that the traumatic experience stuck with her and shook her to her core.
“I think that’s where it all began to unravel,” she said. “I just had this realization: Why am I distrustful all the time? It’s probably because of that. I spent so long disgusted about myself. I would sob in the bathroom, because I thought I was failing.”
Now, she and her band have a new album on the way, titled Strange Little Birds, and Manson is taking the opportunity to not only discuss the sexual attack she suffered as a young woman but also to embrace her imperfections.
Recently, the Manson tumbled off the stage during Garbage’s set at KROQ’s Weenie Roast in LA. She talked about the embarrassing moment with Billboard, stating that owning your shortcomings is empowering and important.
“I want people to see my fall. I don’t want to make a lie that I am this perfect person. I am a hot mess! It’s OK to fall.”
