Curious about K-pop but don’t know where to start? Longtime veteran of the most interesting genre in music? Just an all-around happy-go-lucky music lover in general? Well, you’ve come to the right place because it’s an exciting time in the world of K-pop.
Since we at Celebuzz! love any and all music, every week we’ll be taking a look back at the best things that happened in K-Pop. There were several highlights in the K-Pop world from this week as well as last. EXID finally made their comeback today (June 1) with “L.I.E.”; Jonghyun is winning big with “She Is”; Dean and Heize released their collaboration “Shut Up and Groove”; and many other artists like Fiestar, Dumbfounded, f(x)’s Luna, BTS and Jessica have released music videos.
EXID dropped their new music video for “L.I.E.” which welcomes us into the EXID hotel. Their first full-length album Street also came out today, following their last single “Hot Pink.” Check out the whimsical music video:
SHINee member Jonghyun released his first full-length solo album, She Is, on May 23. The title track has been winning big this week, on both SBS MTV The Show and Show Champion. See the cute music video for “She Is” below:
f(x)‘s Luna just released her solo song “Free Somebody,” which features strong vocals and a very groovy beat. The music video is super creative, incorporating both cartoon animation and Luna and her backup dancers IRL.
Fiestar made their comeback yesterday (May 31) with the music video for “Apple Pie.” The colorful music video and upbeat song will definitely inspire your baking for some summer lazy day.
Heize and Dean
Heize and Dean paired up for the crazy good “Shut Up and Groove.” Their fashion is SO on point in the music video, and the song is a great song for partying in the city.
TWICE have been winning big the past couple of weeks (still!) for “Cheer Up,” taking home the top prizes on M! Countdown, Music Bank and Inkigayo for the last two weeks in a row – not to mention they won on all three shows two weeks before that as well. Watch their live performance from M! Countdown below:
Dumbfounded’s video for the song “Safe” is incredible and timely, in light of #OscarsSoWhite as well as the #StarringJohnCho memes (in which popular movies are reimagined with Asian actors instead of white actors). With his video and song, the Korean-American rapper challenges white-washing and underrepresentation of minorities in Hollywood in under 5 minutes by similarly reimagining the scenes from different popular TV shows and movies like The Matrix, Pirates of the Caribbean, Iron Man, and more. He released the following statement along with the video:
After the last Academy Awards and the regular whitewashing of hollywood roles, i wrote this song and made this video adding my piece to the conversation.
JYJ’s Junsu (formerly of TVXQ, and also known as Xia) released his newest song “Rock the World” (featuring The Quiett and Automatic) off his upcoming 4th album XIGNATURE, out on May 30th. The actual music video is very eclectic, and the song is infectious.
Baek Ah Yeon
Baek Ah Yeon‘s new music video for “So-So” calls to mind major cotton candy vibes.
Oh My Girl
“Windy Day” is Oh My Girl‘s latest release, a lighthearted, acoustic track typical of their usual sound.
CLC released their fourth mini-album on May 30th, with the title track being “No Oh Oh.” It’s very cutesy and summery.
Sistar have officially released their first teaser image for their June comeback on Instagram. Check it out below:
Girls Generation‘s Tiffany released her solo debut song “I Just Wanna Dance” a couple of weeks ago, and now she’s got a brand-new dance version (in English!) for the track as well (the Kago Pengchi Remix). Listen to it below:
U-Kiss have a new teaser for “Stalker.” Disturbing connotations of stalking aside…the track sounds promising and will be released in full on June 7.
New boy band KNK released a new teaser yesterday (May 31) for “Back Again” off of their 1st mini album Awake. We can’t wait to see the full dramatic video, which drops tomorrow (June 2).
Former Girls Generation member Jessica released both the Korean and English version of her track “Fly” ft. Fabolous, in addition to the song “Love Me the Same.” As this is her first solo since departing from Girls Generation, she made her debut under Coridel Entertainment.
Korean version of “Fly”:
“Love me the Same”:
The BTS boys have dropped their third and final music video from their “Young Forever” trilogy, and this track (“Save Me”) is definitely our fave. Plus, we’re really feeling their outfits in the MV. They also fared very well on the music shows in the past couple of weeks for their track “Fire.”
Rapper Beenzino‘s “Life in Color” is a fantastic song and MV with tons of paint, pops of color and aesthetically-pleasing/excellently designed interiors. Watch the fun art project-like music video below – you’ll want to watch it over again.
“Need to Feel Needed”:
Monsta X‘s new music video for “All In” will take you on a weird outdoor adventure. It’s Hunger Games like, we think? There’s definitely some kind of war (with beautiful flowers keeping the hope alive).
