Darren Criss: I Wanted to Be Ariel in ‘The Little Mermaid Live in Concert’

Really though…who wouldn’t want to be Ariel?

Although Darren Criss was cast as Prince Eric in Disney’s The Little Mermaid Live in Concert, he admits his character wasn’t the one he grew up idolizing. “Let’s be honest, I wanted to be Ariel,” the actor told People.

So much so that he almost passed up the opportunity because he wouldn’t be singing. “I first thought, ‘Eric doesn’t sing.’ But then they told me they wanted to include songs from the Broadway version. That got my attention,” he revealed.

The live show, which will be performed Friday, Saturday and Monday nights at 8 p.m. at The Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, Calif., also stars Sara Bareilles as Ariel, Rebel Wilson as Ursula, Tituss Burgess as Sebastian the Crab, and John Stamos as Chef Louis.

The cast even teased their upcoming performance of the film’s song, “Under the Sea.”

The Little Mermaid is a movie that meant so much to me as a kid,” Criss says. “I just love that it is going to be celebrated – and that I get to be a part of it.”
