As only Queen Bey can.
The 2016 CFDA Fashion Awards in NYC on Monday night was a star-studded event to honor the fashion industry – but there was one superstar guest no one expected to see.
Beyoncécaptured the CFDA’s 2016 Fashion Icon award but since the CFDA kept it a secret, Mrs. Carter surprised everyone when she appeared onstage in head-to-toe Givenchy to accept the award.
The singer said, “I feel so much love and I feel so proud. As long as I can remember, fashion has been part of my life. Its effect on me actually started before I was born. Many of you guys don’t know this, but my grandmother was a seamstress. My grandparents did not have enough money, they could not afford my mother’s Catholic school tuition. So my grandmother sewed clothes for the priests and the nuns and made uniforms for the students in exchange for my mother’s education. She then passed this gift onto my mother and taught her how to sew.” Read the whole speech here.

The awards ceremony also paid tribute to the late David Bowie. CFDA president and CEO Steven Kolb said, “David was such a good friend to everyone in the industry, so it was a very natural thing that we wanted to remember and celebrate him, not just as a musician, but as someone who influenced style. He was not only a pioneer, but also someone who had great confidence and ease about himself, and that’s what fashion is all about.”
