Diplo: ‘I Wish I Was Beyoncé!’

The world-famous DJ is definitely in the BeyHive!

Diplo recently chatted with Billboard magazine about his numerous projects, his take on pop music, and some collaborations he’d like to see happen. Between side projects like Jack U and Major Lazer, his producing credits and his DJ gigs, the 37-year-old is a very busy man. But even he has some performers he looks up to.

“I wish I was Beyoncé!” he said. “She does one thing, and that’s Beyoncé. I envy that.” Diplo is credited with production on two tracks, “Hold Up” and “All Night,” on Beyoncé’s platinum-selling album Lemonade. The multi-hyphenate discussed his admiration for the singer’s coherent career, where everything has its place.

“She’s one of the only artists who can culminate a body of work so concisely,” he said. “Nobody does that anymore.” He described the powerful experience of hearing his contributions during the HBO special. That’s when it clicked. “I was like, ‘Oh fuck, this all makes sense.'”

Despite his acclaim in the world of DJs, Diplo doesn’t have much interest in the scene these days. “The DJ world is the corniest fucking group of people,” he said. “We’re not celebrities, we’re not famous for any good reason. We’re just … really lame. Besides people like Dillon Francis, who makes fun of the whole thing, or Calvin Harris, it’s a sinking ship. It’s a really lame culture. I’m sad that I’m part of it, but I play the game.”

As for hopeful future collaborations, Diplo has a surprising answer: “I’ve been stalking [country singer] Sam Hunt. I think he can go multiformat in the Taylor Swift way.”

The new issue of Billboard hits newsstands on June 18, 2016.
