Mass Shooting in Orlando Nightclub Leaves 50 Dead, Celebs React
Fifty people were killed when a shooter opened fire in an Orlando gay nightclub early Sunday morning.
Orlando Police Chief John Mina spoke with reporters outside the nightclub called Pulse and said at least 53 more people were injured, making it the deadliest mass shooting in US history.
The police shot and killed the gunman, who CNN reports has been identified as Omar Saddiqui Mateen, 29. “It’s appears he was organized and well-prepared,” the chief said, adding that the shooter had an assault-type weapon, a handgun and “some type of (other) device on him.” Read more in-depth details here.
Authorities are also looking into the possibility the attack was a hate crime, a law enforcement source told CNN.
Many celebrities took to social media to send their condolences and asked their millions of followers to stop the violence.
The mass shooting was the second act of violence to happen in two days in Orlando. Only a few miles from Pulse, 22-year-old singer Christina Grimmie was gunned down on Friday at the Orlando’s Plaza Live theater.
