2016 BET Awards: Every Prince Tribute That You’ve Been Waiting for Since the Billboard Music Awards

Remember when the BET Awards brought Madonna’s Billboard Music Awards Prince tribute to a screeching halt with a single, shady tweet?

Well, they delivered. Multiple times. The performance torch was passed between the hands of the late artist’s contemporaries and younger artists who were inspired by his legacy at the 2016 BET Awards on Sunday (June 26, 2016). With each hand-off, the flame lit in Prince’s memory grew stronger, and his purple spirit was tangible once again.

A collaboration between The Roots, Erykah Badu and Bila kicked things off after Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar brought the heat in a rendition of “Freedom” from her latest album, Lemonade.

Tori Kelly and Stevie Wonder covered “Take Me With You” together before Jennifer Hudson brought the house to their feet with an unforgettable performance of “Purple Rain.”

Maxwell sang “Nothing Compares 2 U,” the same song that Madonna used in her own Prince tribute, after sauntering through his new track, “Lake by the Ocean.”

Janelle Monáe lit up the stage with electric funk in her vivacious medley of the legendary artist’s biggest hits.

And finally, Sheila E. honored the Purple One with a star-studded mélange of her own.
