Thandie Newton Opens Up About Appalling Encounter with Male Big-Time Director
The actress has shared how a powerful industry insider victimized her during an audition.
In a new interview with W magazine, Thandie Newton revealed a disturbing casting call with an older high-profile director, shining a light on the disgusting misconduct that some men in Hollywood perpetrate on young actresses trying to get roles.
“A director, on a callback, had a camera shooting up my skirt and asked me to touch my tits and think about the guy making love to me in the scene,” Newton said. “I thought, ‘OK, this is a little weird,’ but there was a female casting director in the room and I’d done weird stuff before so I did it.”
The Westworld actress said she forgot about the incident until many years later when a producer drunkenly said to her, “Oh Thandie, I’ve seen you recently!” This prompted Newton’s husband Ol Parker to confront the man about his odd comment.
“It turns out that the director was showing that audition tape to his friends after poker games at his house,” she said. “And they would all get off on it.”
Newton explained that the only way this type of deplorable behavior will stop is if victims come forward and talk about their experiences.
“ … One person will read this and it will stop them getting sexually abused by a director,” she said. “That’s the person I’m interested in.”
