Zachary Quinto Pays Emotional Tribute to Anton Yelchin on ‘The Late Show’
The promotion for the upcoming Star Trek Beyond (in theaters July 22) is proving to be a somber one, as the cast is still reeling from the tragic death of co-star Anton Yelchin, including Zachary Quinto.
Quinto, who plays Spock in the reboot franchise, made an appearance on Friday’s episode of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert and told the host, “I don’t even know how to talk about it. We already knew this was going to be a bittersweet experience as a result of the loss of Leonard [Nimoy, who died in February 2015]. But this has been absolutely devastating for all of us. I think our goal just has to be to celebrate his incredible life and honor him. It was a terrible loss, not only to us but to audiences and the industry.”
Quinto said the cast has been together “for the better part of a decade. We are truly and inextricably entwined and I think we always will be.” Watch the interview below.
Yelchin, who played the young Chekov in the Star Trek series, passed away June 19 at the age of 27 from blunt traumatic asphyxia after his car rolled back and accidentally pinned him against a brick pillar attached to the front gate of his house. His death is now at the center of a civil class action suit against the Jeep manufacturers, who had to recall the model due to an issue with the e-shift transmission.
The young actor was laid to rest June 24 in a private memorial service.
