WATCH: President Barack Obama Sings to Daughter Malia on Her 18th Birthday
This is some presidential cuteness!
Obviously, the White House knows how to celebrate the 4th of July. This year, the first family had Kendrick Lamar and Janelle Monáe perform to honor Independence Day. But, during the party, someone else decided to take the stage and surprise everyone with a song: President Barack Obama.
Being commander-in-chief, the 4th of July naturally has a lot of meaning. But for our sitting president, it’s even more significant because his oldest daughter, Malia Obama, turned 18 yesterday.
“And just because it’s a job of a father to embarrass his daughters, I’ve got one last job,” the president said. “It just so happens that we celebrate our country’s birthday on the same day that we celebrate my oldest daughter’s birthday.”
The POTUS then performed a Dad-tastic rendition of “Happy Birthday” for his daughter, who joined her presidential Papa on stage for a hug as the song ended.
The night’s festivities also included an impressive fireworks display to accompany Lamar and Monáe’s set, which the White House Instagram account perfectly captured:
