This Is Why Ashley Graham Thinks Amy Schumer Is a Bit of a Hypocrite
Amy Schumer made waves earlier this year when she called out Glamour magazine for labeling her plus size. However, according to Ashley Graham, the comedienne may not be the best person to speak out about body positivity.
For Graham, she thinks Schumer is taking advantage of a certain “double standard” granted to girls like the Trainwreck star.
“I can see both sides, but Amy talks about being a big girl in the industry. You thrive on being a big girl, but when you’re grouped in with us, you’re not happy about it? That, to me, felt like a double standard,” Graham, who graces the cover of Cosmopolitan’s latest issue, tells the publication.
Graham adds that the term “plus size” shouldn’t even be used to describe curvy women. Though she doesn’t consider herself as a plus size model, she believes she is giving those who have been ignored by the fashion industry.
“Just because I’m not calling myself plus size doesn’t mean I’m not representing a woman who is,” she explains. “I’m giving curvy women a seat at a table that we’ve never been invited to before—a table with high-end fashion people who have never considered us beautiful.”
Graham also notes that her famous curves have gotten her tons of hate as well. Recalling on particular incident, she says online trolls have been lashing out at her husband Justin Ervin, who is black, for marrying her.
“One comment on Instagram was ‘I knew a girl her size could only be with a black guy.’ I think that’s so ugly,” she remembers. “But we talk about the fact that I’m white and he’s black all the time. I’ve seen how racist America is. It’s opened my eyes to how ignorant I have been, how white privilege has taken over a lot of my thoughts and actions because it’s just something that I take for granted.”
Following Graham’s interview, Schumer took to her Twitter to respond. She wrote, “I totally understand Ashley’s feelings. I don’t group myself in with her because she is unbelievably beautiful. Nothing but respect for her.”
