Zayn Malik: An Alien Made Me Quit One Direction
When Glamour asked singer the first time he realized he wanted to leave the boy band for a solo career, Malik revealed that it all came to him when he was asleep.
“An alien spoke to me in a dream,” he told the magazine, adding that singing in the musical group was his first job ever and that he hopes to “invent something” one day.
As for what he did with his first 1D paycheck, Malik said, “Bought myself a beanie, I think—ha!”
Malik quit One Direction in March 2015, leaving bandmates Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne and Niall Horan as a four-piece ensemble to complete their international tour. At the time, he attributed the move to wanting to be “to be a normal 22-year-old.”
“My life with One Direction has been more than I could ever have imagined. But, after five years, I feel like it is now the right time for me to leave the band. I’d like to apologise to the fans if I’ve let anyone down, but I have to do what feels right in my heart,” he said in an official statement. “I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight. I know I have four friends for life in Louis, Liam, Harry and Niall. I know they will continue to be the best band in the world.”
Malik since admitted that his departure caused rifts in most of his relationships with his former bandmates, including a highly publicized fight with Tomlinson, with whom he’s no longer on “friend terms.”
