J.J. Abrams Says They’re Not Recasting Anton Yelchin’s Role for New ‘Star Trek’ Films

J.J. Abrams to Produce TV Show About Michael Jackson's Last Days
A show about Michael Jackson and his last days before his untimely death is in development.

Out of respect, the recently-deceased actor’s character will likely be written out of the series.

Although this week a fourth Star Trek film was greenlit, producer J.J. Abrams said they have no plans to recast Anton Yelchin’s role.

I would say there’s no replacing him,” Abrams told The Toronto Sun. “There’s no recasting. I can’t possibly imagine that, and I think Anton deserves better.”

Just last month, Yelchin was killed when his Jeep rolled down his driveway, pinning him to his front gate. He was 27 years old.

In the new feature film reboot of the classic sci-fi series, Yelchin played Pavel Chekov, the ship’s Russian chief engineer. When asked if they planned to kill off his character for new installments, Abrams said they have yet to decide on a tasteful way to remove Yelchin’s character. “I have thought about it. We’re working on it, and it’s too early to talk about it.”

Star Trek Beyond bows in theaters this weekend.
