Deadline reports Menzel has signed on to play CC, who was played by Bette Midler in the original. Menzel will, of course, record her rendition of “Wind Beneath My Wings,” the beloved Grammy-winning song from the movie, along with “The Glory of Love”. In addition, the Frozen star will record additional songs for the Lifetime remake.

Beaches tells the story of two girls, CC and Hillary, who meet in Venice Beach. Although they come from two totally different backgrounds, the two embark on a lifelong friendship with many ups and downs. CC is a struggling singer, while Hillary, the daughter of a prominent lawyer, tries to find her own destiny. When Hillary is later diagnosed with cancer, CC has to do soul searching to support her friend. The part of Hillary, originally played by Barbara Hershey, has yet to be cast.

Lifetime TV has been on a remake kick lately, recently rebooting another female-driven 1980s movie classic, Steel Magnolias, with the remake delivering rating records for the network.

Beaches is set for a 2017 premiere.
