Winona Ryder Discusses That Time She Was Arrested for Shoplifting

“It wasn’t like the crime of the century!”

Fifteen years ago, Winona Ryder was arrested for shoplifting in a Beverly Hills department store. Now the starlet is opening up about the bizarre episode and how it gave her some perspective.

“Psychologically, I must have been at a place where I just wanted to stop,” Ryder told Porter magazine for a new spread. “I won’t get into what happened, but it wasn’t what people think… And it wasn’t like the crime of the century!”

The now-44-year-old actress went on to explain that acting simply wasn’t a priority at that time in her life and her conviction was a great excuse to step back and reevaluate her life.

“But it allowed me time that I really needed, where I went back to San Francisco and got back into things that… I just had other interests, frankly.”

With the success of Stranger Things, Ryder’s career prospects are looking their best in years, but that doesn’t mean she craves climbing behind the camera as a director or producer like many of her peers.

“I can only see my own character’s point of view! I’m just not a business person, you know? I wish I was in a way. But acting still excites me. I don’t sleep the day before a new job. I’m sure it’s psychosomatic but still.”
