Daisy Ridley Says Buh-Bye to Instagram After Backlash on Anti-Gun Post
Daisy Ridley decided to turn off her Instagram account this past week, and it’s probably because she received all kinds of negative feedback on a post she wrote, expressing her feelings about gun control.
After attending the 2016 Teen Choice Awards on Sunday (July 31), the Star Wars: The Force Awakens star was moved by Jessica Alba and Ne-Yo’s emotional presentation that featured teens whose family has been affected by gun violence and shootings across the nation – and posted some thoughts about it.
Ridley wrote on the now-deleted Instagram post (via The Nerdy Bird), “Serious bit: as I sat in the audience yesterday tears were streaming down my face at the tribute to those that have been lost to gun violence. I didn’t get a great picture of the incredible group that came on stage but they were so brave. It was a true moment of togetherness. We must #stoptheviolence.”
She was then inundated with harsh criticism about being a hypocrite since she uses weapons in The Force Awakens.
Ridley’s Instagram was generally a fun place to see all her BTS Star Wars photos and more, so it’s a shame to see it go. Apparently, her supportive fans feel the same way, and even asked Ridley’s co-star John Boyega on his Instagram to get her to come back.
He responded, “She’s doing what’s best for her. I won’t be advising my friend to come back. Sorry, Can’t do that. She make her own decisions and as a friend I support her right to.”
Ridley did return to Instagram briefly on Wednesday to explain her departure. “Hey y’all!! Just wanted to explain the hiatus… I just want to be on my phone less! Trying to be more present and all that and got a busy few months ahead so wanted less distractions… It’s all good :) I always appreciate the support and love and Instagram community! X.”
And like that, *poof* she’s gone.
