Here’s Who Phoebe Was Supposed to End Up with on ‘Friends’

A 'Friends' Musical Is Happening
Prepare to be swept off your feet by nostalgia.

Though Friends has been off the air for more than 10 years, it’s only now that we’re getting word of its original ending.

Apparently, Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) didn’t actually end up with the man producers originally wanted her to marry. According to Hank Azaria, who played Phoebe’s love interest David, his character was supposed to be with the “Smelly Cat” singer. (As any devoted fan will know, Phoebe ended up married to Paul Rudd’s Mike when the NBC series ended in 2004.)

“No, I didn’t know that was the end of David. The plan always was kind of to bring him back,” he told The Huffington Post, referring to David’s decision to move to Minsk instead of staying in New York City with Phoebe.

So, why did Phoebe’s fate changed? Apparently, it had to do with the ever-so charming Rudd.

“I think, honestly, what happened was Paul Rudd is so awesome that they sort of found a groove with him and [my character] became more of just the grist for that mill,” Azaria said, adding,“As opposed to the other way around.”

“It actually did sting a little bit,” the actor continued, referring to David’s snub. “Whatever part of me is David the science guy who went to Minsk, which admittedly is probably a small part of me [laughs], but that part of me wanted to end up with Phoebe. So I was sort of sad when I didn’t.”

Still, Azaria shared that Phoebe did end up with the right person.

“He certainly has gone on to prove that he was comedically deserving of Phoebe’s love,” Azaria said of Rudd. “He’s a handsome devil. He’s actually annoyingly handsome. He shouldn’t really be allowed to be that handsome. He’s like the Tom Brady of comedy.”

Aww, lobsters for life!
