Gigi Gorgeous Was Detained at Dubai Airport for Being Transgender
Model Gigi Gorgeous, who publicly documented her transition on YouTube, was kept at an airport in Dubai for several hours on Tuesday (Aug. 9, 2016) for being a transgender woman trying to enter the country. According to the 24-year-old, the whole ordeal was “one of the scariest moments” of her entire life.
“After being detained and held at the Dubai airport for over 5 hours, this was the moment my baby came to rescue me,” she wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of pal Nats Getty embracing her at the airport terminal. “Yesterday was one of the scariest moments of my entire life and I wouldn’t wish it upon anyone. How you can be denied entry somewhere just because of who you are is seriously disgusting and also very scary. This further proves the need for CHANGE.”
She added, “I am now on my way to somewhere much more accepting. Safe and sound and happy.”
Gorgeous also told TMZ that an immigration office said to her, “I was told you are transgender. You cannot come into the country.“
Airport officials told the publication that Gorgeous’ passport had her listed as male and had a male photo. Gorgeous, who was born Gregory Allan Lazzarto but changed her name to Gigi Loren in 2014, denied the claims.
TMZ added that the “imitation of women by men” is illegal in Dubai, which is part the United Arab Emirates, and violators can face up to a year in jail.
